John Lewis opened a small drapers shop in Oxford Street, London, England, in 1864.
John Spedan Lewis (founder of the John Lewis Partnership), son of John Lewis, is born, in 1885. John Lewis buys control of Peter Jones in 1905. John Lewis hands control of Peter Jones to John Spedan Lewis, in 1914.
In 1918 the first edition of the Gazette is published, founded by John Spedan Lewis. In the following year, 1919, John Spedan Lewis sets up a staff council. John Lewis died in 1928.
In the same year, John Spedan Lewis converts the firm into a public company, John Lewis and Company Limited. John Lewis Partnership plc is incorporated with companies house as a Public limited Company in 1929. In the same year the John Lewis Partnership becomes legal.

In the ensuing year, 2012 the grand opening of John Lewis Exeter store. John Lewis opened its first flexible format shop in Exeter, Devon, England, in 2012. In the year after, 2013 John Lewis Ashford store opened its doors to customers in Kent, England.
In 2014, John Lewis opened a new flexible format shop in York, North Yorkshire, England. In the same year John Lewis store in York was opened. John Lewis opened its first airport shop in Heathrow Terminal 2, in 2014.
John Lewis Birmingham opened it's doors to the public for the first time, in the West Midlands, England, in the following year, 2015. John Lewis at Home and Waitrose Basingstoke store opened its doors, in Hampshire, England in 2015. In 2017 John Lewis opened its first shop in Essex, England - John Lewis Chelmsford.
In the following year, 2018, John Lewis had 50 shops, 36 department stores, 12 John Lewis at home and shops at St Pancras International and Heathrow Terminal 2. John Lewis YouTube channel reached 24,929,035 views in 2019. In the same year, John Lewis paid out its lowest bonus to staff since the 1950s as profits plunged in 2018 amid challenging trading.
Easter delivered John Lewis Partnership double-digit weekly sales growth in 2019. In the same year, John Lewis & Partners launched specialist children’s shoe fitting service in partnership with the National Autistic Society. In 2019, Home Solutions from John Lewis became available in Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and Kent.
The autumn winter 2019 signalled the evolution of menswear at John Lewis & Partners, its most significant menswear investment to date, in the same year. John Lewis & Partners + Denby Introduced Quartz Rose - a collaboration of colour, texture and passion, created together with skill and care in Derbyshire, England in 2019.
