In 1864 John Lewis opened a small drapers shop in Oxford Street, London, England.

In 1885 John Spedan Lewis (founder of the John Lewis Partnership), son of John Lewis, is born. In 1905 John Lewis buys control of Peter Jones. In 1914 John Lewis hands control of Peter Jones to John Spedan Lewis.

The first edition of the Gazette is published, founded by John Spedan Lewis in 1918. In the next year, 1919, John Spedan Lewis sets up a staff council. John Spedan Lewis converts the firm into a public company, John Lewis and Company Limited in 1928.

John Lewis died, in the same year. In 1929 the John Lewis Partnership becomes legal. John Lewis Partnership plc is incorporated with companies house as a Public limited Company, in the same year.

In 1963 John Spedan Lewis died. John Lewis Edinburgh store grand opening in 1973. In 1976, John Lewis Brent Cross store in the Brent Cross Shopping Centre opened its doors to the public fo the first time, in London Borough of Barnet, England.

John Lewis Peterborough store opened, in 1982. John Lewis, the Partnership, took over the Welwyn Department Store in 1984. John Lewis High Wycombe store was opened to customers, in 1988.

John Lewis Aberdeen store opened for business in the following year, 1989. In 1995, John Lewis reported pre-tax profits of £116.8m for the year to 28 January, up 25 per cent. John Lewis opened a new store in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, England in the same year.

In 1998 John Lewis Cribbs Causeway shop opened to the public for the very first time. John Lewis Glasgow store opened its doors to the public in the year after, 1999. In 1999 John Lewis Bluewater store opened in the Bluewater shopping centre, England.

The Partnership took the decision to change the department store's name from Bainbridges to John Lewis Newcastle, in 2002. In the same year John Lewis Solihull store opened its doors. JL rebranded GH Lee store in Liverpool to John Lewis Liverpool, in 2002.

John Lewis Trafford store opened - the shop was smaller than most John Lewis stores in 2005. John Lewis rolled out men’s refit and women’s own label in 2007. In 2009 John Lewis At Home store was opened in Poole.

In the same year, John Lewis Cardiff store opened its doors to customers, in Wales. The first smaller format John Lewis at home shop opens in Poole, Dorset, in 2009. In the year after, 2010, John Lewis joined YouTube.

The official Twitter for John Lewis & Partners was created, in 2010. John Lewis At Home Croydon store opened, in South London, England in the same year. In 2010 John Lewis At Home Swindon opened its doors for business.

The second John Lewis Partnership contact centre was opened in Didsbury, a borough of Manchester, in the same year. John Lewis At Home opened a new store in Chichester, West Sussex in 2011. In the same year, John Lewis At Home Tamworth opened.

There were 32 John Lewis shops (28 department stores and four John Lewis at home) in 2011. John Lewis At Home latest store at Chester was opened in the same year. John Lewis At Home new store opened in Tunbridge Wells with a coffee shop in 2011.

John Lewis opened its first flexible format shop in Exeter, Devon, England, in the year after, 2012. The grand opening of John Lewis Exeter store in 2012. John Lewis Ashford store opened its doors to customers in Kent, England, in the following year, 2013.

John Lewis opened its first airport shop in Heathrow Terminal 2 in 2014. In the same year John Lewis store in York was opened. John Lewis opened a new flexible format shop in York, North Yorkshire, England, in 2014.

In the year after, 2015 John Lewis Birmingham opened it's doors to the public for the first time, in the West Midlands, England. In 2015, John Lewis at Home and Waitrose Basingstoke store opened its doors, in Hampshire, England. In 2017, John Lewis opened its first shop in Essex, England - John Lewis Chelmsford.

John Lewis had 50 shops, 36 department stores, 12 John Lewis at home and shops at St Pancras International and Heathrow Terminal 2 in the next year, 2018. John Lewis YouTube channel reached 24,929,035 views in 2019.
